FAQs

Late 19th-century British watercolour painting typically features atmospheric depictions of landscapes, seascapes, and architectural scenes, often characterised by a transparent wash technique and a focus on natural light.

These works were created using fine pigments suspended in water-soluble binders, applied to heavyweight rag paper or handmade paper made from cotton or linen fibres.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paper watermark, the ageing characteristics of the pigments and paper fibres, framing methods, and stylistic consistency with the period.

An antique watercolour adds historic depth to contemporary spaces and is best displayed using conservation-grade framing away from direct sunlight to protect the pigments.

Preservation requires UV-filtering glass, acid-free mounts, and stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent paper yellowing and pigment fading.
