Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1920s.
The scene is a classic view of the city from the Southeast looking towards the cathedral majestically perched on the hill in the distance. The work is signed to the lower left A.W.Franklin and dated 1923. There appears to be no record of the artist and it is likely that this is either a pseudonym used by another artist or that he simply did not exhibit. There is an ability here and the size, scale and quality of the piece and the framing mean that they must have been an artist of some note even if only regionally. The work has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The original frame is quite simply superb for the period, in the Georgian style it is beautifully swept with moulding front and back. The frame retains the original gilding with only some minor repairs in areas. The whole is a great decorative artwork with a huge amount of impact and an appealing softness and calm to the image.
