Banjo barometers, named for their distinctive shape, became widespread during the 19th century as domestic weather-monitoring instruments transitioned from luxury scientific novelties into common household fixtures in British homes.

These instruments typically feature solid hardwood cases, most commonly oak or mahogany, carved with decorative motifs, enclosing delicate mercury or aneroid mechanisms protected by brass bezels and glass dials.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-carved woodwork, the ageing of the brass components, the typography on the paper or enamel dial, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse of the case.

An antique barometer adds historical texture and focal interest when mounted on a panelled or dark-painted wall within a traditional study, hallway, or living room setting.

Preservation involves hanging the instrument away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture fluctuations, dusting the wood with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes on the brass and dial.
