FAQs

Nineteenth-century oil paintings on board typically utilise rigid supports such as wood panels or millboard, popular among artists for plein air sketching due to their durability and portability.

These works commonly feature artist-grade oil pigments bound in linseed oil applied to prepared wooden panels or pulp boards, housed within gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of material ageing, canvas or board composition, traditional framing techniques, pigment characteristics, and artist signatures or historical documentation.

Pairing historic framed artwork with contemporary surroundings creates visual contrast, often achieved by hanging them on neutral walls or displaying them on picture ledges.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, keeping pieces away from direct sunlight, and cleaning surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush.
