Stumpwork, also known as raised work, is a style of embroidery originating in the seventeenth century where figures and motifs are raised above the background fabric using padding, wire forms, and carved wooden foundations. Highly popular in England during the Stuart period, these compositions frequently depicted royal figures, allegorical scenes, and biblical stories.

Craftspeople used fine silk ground fabrics, silk floss, metal wrapped threads, wire frames, carved wood padding moulds, and embellishments such as seed pearls or glass beads.
