Although I have no proof whatsoever, I like to think that this remarkable picture was painted by a young Georgio de Chirico shortly after his arrival in France in 1911. It is certainly in keeping with the artist''s work, but is unsigned.
Born in Greece and formed in the crucible of classical culture and late German romanticism, De Chirico developed the foundations of a new artistic conception alongside his younger brother Alberto Savinio.
After a stint in Munich, Milan and Florence, in Paris that he established a singular plastic vocabulary in contact with the modernist pictorial revolutions. He was quickly noticed by the artistic personalities such as Guillaume Apollinaire, André Breton and Paul Éluard.
I love the back of the painting almost as much as the front! Our oil was painted, on fact, on the board of a marbeled drawing folder! While there some wear, the painting is in overall good condition.
Measuring 55 x 44 cm, the overall framed size in a stunning period carved hardwood frame is 67 x 56 cm.
