Description

Dated in three places to 1909, this pretty rug was woven in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus and is a very good example of the influence of European decorative style in eastern rugs. At the turn of the 20th century, the Karabagh district was still part of the Russian empire, and the Russian presence was felt in all areas of life, from government and military administration, to cultural life. The existence of many Russian officials and business people resident in the region undoubtedly influenced the local weavers and rug dealers to weave carpets and rugs to their taste. This rug is a fine example. Both the colouring and design is very much is the Baroque style which remained popular with Russian decorators and designers. The use of only three or four colours is very striking, and also please note the birds concealed in the design, a feature of Karabagh rugs which adds a further element of charm. It is a beautiful piece which would work equally well in modern decorative settings too. Cherished through the generations, the dating to 1909 is of historic significance, and it has survived in good condition. Professionally cleaned in our workshops.
