We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette art gained immense popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an accessible form of portraiture and narrative illustration before photography became widespread. Originating in Europe and refined through German scherenschnitte techniques, these intricate cut-outs relied on fine handwork to capture complex scenes and figures using shadow profiles.

Traditional silhouettes are crafted using lightweight black paper or card stock, which is cut using fine shears or scalpel blades and mounted onto a contrasting cream or white backing paper. The completed artwork is typically housed behind glass within a simple dark timber or gilded frame to protect the fragile paper from moisture and dust.

Authentic period pieces often feature subtle hand-cut imperfecions under magnification, natural paper yellowing or foxing from age, and original glass with hand-blown irregularities. Machine-printed reproductions tend to lack the raised edges of layered cut paper and display uniform, smooth line work when inspected closely.

Monochrome silhouette pictures work effectively when grouped in a gallery wall display alongside modern line drawings or black-and-white photography. Placing a small framed silhouette in a narrow alcove, bookshelf nook, or above a hallway console table adds graphic contrast and historic depth to contemporary spaces.

To preserve delicate paper cut-outs, hang the frame away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or humidity to prevent fading, warping, and foxing. Utilize UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials if re-framing is required to protect the original paper from chemical deterioration.
