Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grisaille is a monochrome painting technique executed entirely in shades of a single colour, typically grey, brown, or sepia wash. Historically popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, artists used this method to study light, shadow, and atmospheric depth before creating full-colour works, or as finished topographical landscape studies.

19th-century monochrome drawings were created using natural earth pigments, sepia ink derived from cuttlefish, or Indian ink applied with fine watercolour brushes onto handmade rag paper. Artists diluted the ink with water in varying degrees to achieve precise tonal graduations across the composition.

Authentic period watercolours usually show age-related patination, subtle toning, or foxing on rag paper, which differs from modern paper. Examining the brushwork under magnification reveals hand-painted tonal layers rather than printed dot matrices, while period framing often features hand-cut mounts.

Monochrome sepia artwork pairs effectively with neutral interior colour palettes, dark timber furniture, or contemporary gallery walls. Placing the painting in an oak or gilded frame with a generous acid-free mount allows the subtle tonal contrasts to stand out against both traditional and contemporary backgrounds.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, watercolour paintings should be mounted using conservation-grade acid-free materials and framed behind UV-protective glass. Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and areas with fluctuating humidity.
