FAQs

Early 20th century British painting often combined traditional academic portraiture techniques with more expressive, impressionistic brushwork and tonal colour palettes.

These artworks were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the ageing of the canvas, oxidisation of the oil pigments, stretcher frame construction, and the craftsmanship of the accompanying period frame.

Hanging an antique oil portrait in a contemporary space adds depth, historical contrast, and character, often serving as a striking focal point on a gallery wall or above a piece of furniture.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity and temperature levels, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on both the canvas and the gilded frame.
