He played a significant role in the revival of pewter for decorative objects, earning recognition with a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. Trained initially as a woodcarver under Honorè Bourdoncle, Brateau transitioned to engraving for renowned jewelry companies like Vever and Boucheron starting in 1874. He later shifted his focus to pewter in 1878. Recognized for his contributions, he was appointed as a member of the Legion of Honour in 1894 and served on the jury at the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
His masterpiece, "L'Olivier" (The Olive Tree), was selected to represent pewter work at the 1900 World Fair. Brateau's works are housed in esteemed institutions such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while others have been auctioned at prestigious events like Sotheby's.
