Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The work must have been done while viewing the animal as it is so lifelike and perfectly captured. The painting, as is often the case with oil sketches, has been made on a fragmentary panel which also has the remains of another oil on the reverse. The work is in excellent untouched condition and is signed by monogram to the lower left: EHF, but the artist is unidentified. The birds eye maple frame is nineteenth century but has not always been with the painting, it has a great colour and patina, please note it is slightly warped. The whole has a great period look and packs a huge presence for a diminutive work. C.1900.
