Large Oil Painting by Franz Reder-broili

1900 - 1920
Description

A large and dramatic oil on canvas landscape scene by the German artist Franz Reder-Broili 1854-1918. The work shows an interesting view across a river and through an old stone bridge, concentrating mainly on the movement of the water and reflections in it. The technique and style are typically impressionistic with a refined use of paint, applied with a broad brush. The work is fully signed to the lower left ‘Reder-Broili’. Franz Reder-Broili was born in 1854 at Mellrichstadt, and died in 1918 in Munich. His teachers included Johann Georg Hiltensperger, Ludwig von Löfftz and Otto Seitz. He lived and worked mainly in Munich. He can be seen as a forerunner of the influential Dachau School. He concentrated on landscapes, maintaining an imposing style as can be seen in this example. He belonged to the long-established Reder family, which also included the landscape painter and poet Heinrich von Reder and the freedom fighter Ignaz Reder. A painting of this size and quality must have been an exhibited work and it does retain a printed address on the stretcher, often a sign of an exhibited piece. The painting is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. The work also retains the original gilt frame which is in good untouched condition with the odd repair as would be expected for such a large example. The whole is a fine piece of impressionist landscape work which has a huge amount of decorative appeal but also gives a feeling of tranquillity. C.1900.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Landscape oil paintings from this era typically feature natural topographies, stone architecture, and rural vistas rendered with attention to natural light, realistic perspective, and expressive brushwork.

Paintings were predominantly executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, framed in carved timber mouldings adorned with gilt plaster or leaf detailing.

Authenticity is verified by examining the canvas weave, natural craquelure pattern, signature consistency, historical mounting hardware, and age-appropriate oxidation on the rear stretched wood frame.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a console table or sideboard, pairing it with contemporary lighting or minimalist furniture to contrast the ornate gilt moulding.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or abrasive cloths that could strip the varnish layer or dislodge delicate gold leaf on the frame.
