FAQs

Grand Tour sculptures are miniature or reduced-size replicas of classical antiquities collected by wealthy travellers, particularly young aristocrats, during their educational tours of Europe, especially Italy, from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century.

Sculptural souvenirs from the Grand Tour were commonly carved from white Italian marble, alabaster, or cast in bronze, often mounted on integrated stone or slate bases to emulate museum artefacts.

Authentic period pieces typically display natural mineral veining, subtle patination, hand-carved tool marks, and age-related wear rather than the uniform consistency or resin seams found in modern reproductions.

Classical sculptures add architectural weight and historical contrast when displayed on a dark wood mantelpiece, library desk, or atop a stack of art books in a modern minimalist space.

Alabaster is extremely water-sensitive and soft; it should only be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding all liquids, commercial cleaning agents, or direct sunlight.
