Grand Tour Alabaster Wrestlers Or Pancrastinae

Large, late 19th century Grand Tour very dense alabaster, or possibly marble, library sculpture of the Pancrastinae or Wrestlers after the 1st century AD Roman copy in the Medici collection in the Tribuna of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, itself a copy of the lost Greek original from the 3rd century BC. Beautifully carved with a real sense of movement and power. The two young athletes, bodies crossed engaged in the pankration an ancient type of wrestling. Super quality, heavy example with real presence. Integral kidney shaped base. Italian, circa 1880.
