Three Small English Early19th Century Oil Paintings

Circa 1835. The three small religious oil paintings on wood panels with the subject’s title in gilt to the lower edge, complete in their original gilded frames. King David holding a Harp, St Paul with his sword and St Peter with his keys and book. To the verso of each painting is a now barely legible handwritten note referring to the subject, the artist John Wood and some further illegible text.
 
Two pictures measure approximately 21cm x 14cm including the frames and the Third slightly larger 23 x 15cm.
 
 
John Wood. History and portrait painter born in London on 29 June 1801. He studied in Sass''s school and at the Royal Academy, where in 1825 he gained the gold medal for painting. In the two previous years he had exhibited ‘Adam and Eve lamenting over the Body of Abel,’ and ‘Michael contending with Satan,’ and in 1826 he sent ‘Psyche wafted by the Zephyrs.’ These and other works displayed unusual powers of invention and design, and gained for him a great temporary reputatio...
