FAQs

An antique portrait adds character and depth when hung gallery-style on neutral walls, contrasted against modern minimalist furniture, or placed on a mantelpiece for a layered look.

Paintings should be kept out of direct sunlight, away from excessive humidity and temperature fluctuations, and gently dusted with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the craquelure in the paint layer, pigment analysis, canvas or board ageing, stretcher marks, and historical framing techniques.

Traditional materials included linseed oil paints, natural resin varnishes, and rigid wooden panels or canvas stretched over timber frames, often accompanied by hand-carved wooden frames.

An oil on board painting is a work of art created using oil-based pigments applied directly to a rigid support panel, such as wood or stiff cardboard, which was a common and durable medium for artists.
