Crossing The River, Pastoral River Landscape French Barbizon 19th Century Oil On Canvas

£260    $350    €306
A lovely 19th Century pastoral landscape by Charles Donzel (1824-1889) depicting two figures knee deep in the river.

It is very much in the tradition of the Barbizon art movement, lead by Theodore Rousseau and Jean Francois Milet, which was concerned with the preservation of France’s rural landscapes; awareness of the sanctity of labor; and the encroachment of industrialisation on a once bucolic environment.

Charles Donzel had studied music and sculpture before going on to focus on painting. His paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salon, and a drawing by the artist is now in the collections of the British Museum.

Our oil on canvas is signed has been relined and restored. It is signed to the lower left. Measuring 30 x 44 cm, the overall framed size: is 35 x 48cm.
