In the procession can be seen the two other prisoners, hands bound, who were to hang either side of Christ, guards on foot and horseback and numerous onlookers. The number of figures depicted in the procession grew towards the latter part of the Middle Ages to display a wide range of emotion from anger to grief with Peter Bruegel the Elder's masterpiece displaying this to powerful affect. At the top of the panel, outside the city walls, the two other crosses are being built.
This panel is decorated in old paint, with one corner repaired. To the back is an old hand written label 'The Procession to Calvary. S. Matthews 27.'
