19th Century Victorian Mahogany Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century Mahogany Pedestal Chest, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Over Five Drawers Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Raised On Original Plinth To Bottom.

This excellent quality mid 19th century victorian period chest of drawers is incredibly attractive due to the well figured, rich mahogany used for its construction. It also retains its original victorian turned wooden knobs, which for many will be a pleasant change and different look to those which have received brass replacements.

Overall the quality of the construction is excellent, as mentioned the maker has used very high grade mahogany on the exterior and also lovely solid oak for the interior drawer linings, which has resulted in the drawers still "running", which means opening and closing, perfectly even to this day.

Overall this is an incredibly functional article of antique furniture, as fit for purpose as the day it was made and stylistically, very much like the more commonly found wellington chest, it offers a slightly different perspective as well as practicality to any room.

There are working locks and keys and there is next to know restoration to speak of. As with all items which we offer for sale this victorian chest of drawers has been inspected, and attended to, by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being presented for sale ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home or office.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Constructed during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), these chests feature rich mahogany veneers, solid timber framing, rounded top corners, and turned wooden knobs over a sturdy plinth or bracket base.

They traditionally feature solid pine or oak secondary timber linings with hand-cut dovetail joints, flame mahogany drawer fronts, keyhole escutcheons with iron locks, and turned mahogany knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, slight irregularities in dovetail joints, original brass or iron mortise locks, natural timber shrinkage, and light patina around the wooden handles.

Balance the deep wood tone by placing modern abstract artwork above the chest, incorporating neutral wall paint, and styling the top surface with contemporary ceramics or brass table lamps.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year along the grain, keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and dust regularly with a soft cloth.
