Fereghan Rug, West Persia, Circa 1880 2.03m X 1.29m

19th century
Description

Some of the best and most interesting 19th century Persian rugs were produced in the towns and villages of the Fereghan district, north of Arak. Woven on cotton foundations with fine wool pile using the asymmetric knotting technique (in contrast to the rugs of Melayir which bear some stylistic similarities but which are woven with the symmetric knot), the best examples have a high knot density and thin low clipped pile. This wonderful rug has the technical characteristics of the best Fereghan rugs. Finely knotted with grainy wool and a low clipped pile, the details of the design, especially in the medallion and borders are highly defined. But what captures the attention is the rare abrashed green field. Green was a dye that was used sparingly. Here we see it dominating the rug with stunning effect. The central medallion seems to be floating above the field which the secondary colours are used to sparkling effect in the spandrels and borders. This rug has great presence and is an artistic joy. Signs of wear commensurate with the age. One or two old repairs. Professionally cleaned.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
