Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this piece to the 1920s.
This exceptional rug fits that description well. Woven in the workshops of Kashan in Central Persia around 1920, it has a very rare blue silk background. The field design is supremely elegant. Plants and palmettes seem to be emanating from a source at the base of the field which spread and unfurl along the vertical axis culminating in an ornately drawn crown at the top of the field. The composition is breathtaking, truly royal. Add to that the stunning colours, including a subtle lilac, greens, golds and blues and one has a tour de force, an exemplary vision of Persian textile art. Cherished through the generations, this piece has survived in very good condition with only very minimal signs of wear on the plain weave blue background.
