Bakhtiari Village Rug, Persia, Circa 1890, 2.04m X 1.33m

19th century
Description

The Bakhtiari are an ancient Persia nomadic tribe that migrated in the Zagros Mountains of Persia for centuries. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, they began to settle in village, and wove many type of artifacts for domestic use, including rugs, trapping and large carpets. I am always surprised by the variety of Bakhtiari village weaving and their daring use of colour and design. This lovely rug fits the bill. Dating to the late 19th century, the colours are all derived from natural dyes with a high wool quality. What strikes me as special about this rug is the scale and drawing of the field ornaments and the precision of the overall composition. The palmettes are boldly drawn are are spaced very elegantly. The simplicity of the ivory border, composed of stylised floral ornaments and and thin meandering vine, complements the strong field design well. Overall, it is a beautiful piece and highly decorative. In very good condition, with good pile. There are a few small old repairs in a few places, but very well executed. Professionally cleaned in our own workshop.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
