Antique Ziegler Carpet

19th century
Description

This sublime and colourful antique Ziegler carpet is a rare narrow size, more often carpets this length were made much wider.    The rich red main background is a fantastic base colour to allow the indigo blues, golden yellow tones and rare greens to really shine.  The large scale floral design is beautifully proportioned and has great symmetry.  Woven around 1890 these natural dyes are really exquisite and from one of the best weaving workshops in the 19th century.

Condition is very good indeed, only small areas of old restoration which we would often expect on carpets over 130 years old.  We always supply a tough anti-slip underlay which adds body and stops the carpet from moving on any floor type.

Please request a home visit to view this stunning rare green antique Ziegler carpet in situ on a convenient day and time.  We are happy to travel to anywhere in the UK.

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ziegler carpets were manufactured in the Sultanabad region of Persia by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were designed specifically for Western markets, featuring larger scale floral motifs, softer colour palettes, and room-sized proportions.

Authentic Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was dyed using natural vegetable dyes to produce rich, soft tonal variations.

Authentic Ziegler rugs exhibit soft, muted colour tones, wide borders, and spaced-out palmette or floral designs rather than densely packed motifs. The weave is fine yet relaxed, and natural dye abrashessubtle horizontal variations in colourare often visible.

A Ziegler carpet acts as a grounding foundational element in living rooms, dining rooms, or large hallways. The classic terracotta and navy palette pairs effectively with neutral linen upholstery, dark wood furniture, or contemporary architectural features.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-knotted fibres with a beater bar. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and neutral soap solution, rotate the carpet annually to distribute wear, and use a carpet pad underneath.
