FAQs

The English School of the 19th century is characterised by a focus on naturalistic landscapes, atmospheric effects, and observational mastery, often depicting rural scenes, lakes, and coastal views with delicate washes.

These works were typically created using gum-based watercolour pigments applied to handmade or rag paper, often utilizing a pencil or ink underdrawing and sometimes enhanced with bodycolour or gouache.

Authenticity is identified through paper characteristics such as watermarks and chain lines, the chemical composition of early pigments, oxidation patterns, and the papers natural ageing process.

An antique watercolour brings historic character to a room and is best framed with acid-free mounts and UV-protective glass, hung away from direct sunlight to preserve the delicate pigments.

Preservation requires maintaining stable humidity and temperature levels, keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and employing professional conservation framing techniques.
