FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape painting often focused on romanticism, capturing the sublime power and natural beauty of the countryside with an emphasis on dramatic light, atmospheric weather conditions, and detailed brushwork.

These works typically utilised artist-grade oil paints applied to stretched woven linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames often featuring compo or plaster ornamentation.

Authenticity is assessed through examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, artist signatures, craquelure patterns, and the ageing characteristics of the oil medium under ultraviolet light.

Pairing a traditional gilt-framed landscape with contemporary minimalist decor creates a striking focal point, allowing the historical narrative and rich textures of the artwork to contrast effectively with clean lines.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and relative humidity levels, keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight, avoiding chemical cleaners, and periodically consulting a professional conservator for dust removal and varnish inspection.
