Late 18th Century Gilt Framed Oil Painting on Canvas of Cattle Drinking

18th century
Description

An impressive late-18th/early-19th Century gilt framed oil painting on canvas of cattle drinking at a watering spot watched over by the drover taking a ‘well-earned’ break, seated on a nearby bank! It is a good study of the trees and glimpses of distant views with sheep grazing. Bright colours. I have been unable to find a signature, although with a good clean a signature may become visible. Good original gilt frame.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pastoral landscape painting of the late 18th century emphasizes idealised natural scenery, foliage, natural lighting, and livestock such as cattle or sheep. The genre was strongly influenced by classical landscape traditions and aimed to evoke tranquil rural life.

Artisans used natural oil pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied directly onto hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were typically carved from wood and finished with real gold leaf application using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate canvas oxidation, subtle surface craquelure in the paint layer, and hand-forged stretchers or joints. Frames from this era display wood shrinkage, layered gesso bases, and natural patina on the gilding.

A traditional gilt-framed painting functions well as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard. Pairing classic artwork with contemporary neutral paint schemes creates an engaging juxtaposition of historical and modern design elements.

Display canvas artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and consult a qualified fine art conservator for deep cleaning or varnish removal.
