Description

A fine set of four 19th Century hand coloured engravings of flycatchers, by William Swainson. These are presented in our handmade copies of an original Regency frame. These frames are made in our workshop, using the traditional methods of wood, plaster, gesso, bole and gilding with 23 carat gold leaf. The glass mounts are decorated with the Verre Eglomise technique. They are subtly aged and finished with a period or hand cast brass picture ring for hanging. Circa 1855.

The engravings came from ''The Naturalists Library'' by William Swainson, Edited by Sir William Jardine - 1833 - 1843.

William Swainson 1789 - 1855, was an ornithologist and artist and a fellow of the Linnean Society and the Wernerain sociaty of Edinbourgh. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society after returning from Brazil in 1820. In 1841 he emigrated to New Zealand. Several birds were names after him by famous naturalists of the period including Swainsons Warbler by John James Audubon.

19th-century ornithological engravings are detailed scientific illustrations of birds created during an era of expanding natural history documentation. Artists and naturalists, such as William Swainson, created accurate copperplate or steel engravings that were subsequently coloured by hand for inclusion in bound volumes or standalone folios.

These prints were executed on heavy rag paper using metal plates etched or engraved with fine line work. Once printed in dark ink, artists applied watercolours by hand to accurately depict the plumage and foliage of each specimen.
