Chippendale Period Mahogany Gentleman's Dressing Chest

18th century
Description

A fine 18th century mahogany gentleman's dressing chest.

The top drawer with a baized slide opening to reveal a fitted interior with a mirror and two hidden drawers at the back.

The original brass handles on the drawer fronts retain some of the gilt lacquer and the drawer linings and dovetail joints are of the best quality. The canted corners with finely carved acanthus corbels leading down to bracket feet with cut out design.

This fabulous chest has some features found in furniture from Chippendales workshops, the handles are listed as The Finest, the red wash to the underneath, and the blocks to build up the feet. The interior of the fitted top drawer with the easel mirror and the small axe head handle to the secret drawers are all similar to the designs used by Chippendale.

The National trust has an online exhibition called Chippendale Revealed where the furniture from Nostell Priory is illustrated showing the close relationship between the construction and use of the handles etc to our example.

Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
