Girl, Mule and Squirrel: Picasso Student Woman Artist Irene Lagut, 1942, Folk Scene Mixed Media Watercolour and Coloured Pencil Drawing

1920 - 1940
Description

A very evocative and delicate work by Irène Lagut, a French woman artist who was at the forefront of modernity in early 20th Century Paris. She studied with Picasso in the 1910s and 20s, and the Master became so enamoured with her that he proposed mariage! Irène refused, not least because of her love for the painter Serge Jastrebzoff (known as Serge Férat) with whom she had a stormy affair and with whom she lived for 7 years. Working alongside Serge's friends Max Jacob , Chirico and Gino Severini, Irène made her debut at the first exhibition of the Soirées de Paris, which presented paintings by Léopold Survage and drawings and watercolors by Irène. The catalog was prefaced by poet Guillaume Apollinaire.

While clearly finding inspiration in everything she saw - folk art, surrealism, neo primitivism, extra european art - Irène had an absoluteley unique style. With a dreamlike atmosphere and a lot of poetry, she created her own world, which you will discover in the small work presented here. Measuring 14 x 19 cm, the watercolour and coloured pencil drawing is signed and dated 1942 at the lower right. The overall framed size is 30 x 36 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th century French naive art works often feature simplified forms, narrative storytelling, and flattened perspective, combining traditional regional themes with modern artistic techniques.

Artists typically combined watercolour washes, coloured pencils, graphite, and gouache on heavy cotton rag paper to achieve textured layering and tonal depth.

Authentic works from this era display consistent paper aging, legible period signatures, documented exhibition or gallery history, and physical evidence of hand-applied media rather than modern reproduction methods.

Frame the artwork with a simple timber moulding and mount it within a neutral gallery wall or position it above a console table to complement contemporary decor.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight behind UV-filtering glass, maintain stable relative humidity, and ensure non-invasive acid-free mounting materials are used to prevent discolouration.
