Description

Woven around 1900 in either the Donegal workshops in Ireland or in Kidderminster, England, this magnificent carpet expresses in exemplary style the aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement which was so greatly influenced by eastern art and design. There are elements drawn from Turkish Oushak carpets, such as the branches of weeping willow trees in the field and border, and the generous spacing of the ornaments. But the overall composition has the character of the Arts and Crafts period. The colours are very typical, with a soft blue background to the field, and very complementary greens and yellows. The generous terracotta border is elegant and expressive. Note the large format of the carpet which would be ideal for a grand drawing room. This is a beautiful carpet which would work equally well in a period or contemporary setting. Generally good condition. Minimal signs of wear. Very minor repairs.
