Size: 6ft 6in x 1ft 9in (199 x 53cm) excluding tassels.

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba of exceptionally large size.

Circa 1900.

Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

This is one of the largest size torba that I have handled, it probably originates from the borders of Northern Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The design is a variant of one of the classic Ersari designs. Note the original tassels which make this a very decorative display item.

The torba is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

Hand washed and ready for display.
