Description

The Lakai are the only truly nomadic group left in Central Asia. They are Uzbek speaking, but inhabit Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, This is a beautiful example of Lakai embroidery from Uzbekistan dating to the end of the 19th century. Worked in coloured silks on a red plain weave background, it was probably made originally as part of a robe or clothing. All the dyes appear to be natural. Kaleidoscopic yet serene at the same time. In generally good condition. Original lining intact.
