Regency Period Mahogany and Ebony Line Inlaid Concave Fronted Commode

19th century
Description

No:11068

A rare Regency Period Mahogany and ebony line inlaid concave fronted commode with a drawer above a cupboard and a pull out pot section with the original pot cover and with reeded column turret front corners attached to and supporting the pot section when opened and containing hidden arms, the whole raised on brass cups and casters and retaining the original turned mahogany knobs.

This high quality cabinet was almost certainly designed and made by Gillows of Lancaster.

Circa 1820 Price :£ 3,250-00p.

Height:32.5”,82.5cms, Width:25”,64 cms, Depth:22.5”,57 cms.

Notes: The Hackwood Park Sale by Christie’s, April 1998 shows the bedroom furniture supplied by Gillows to William Powlett, Lord Bolton in 1813 with several pieces having the identical reeding to the tops and legs. This theme of reeding was continued on the corner pilasters of the wardrobes and with the turret or tower corners as shown in lot 364. The quality of timbers, construction and ingenuity of design shown in this commode tally with the rest of the bedroom pieces supplied by Gillows and strongly suggests that this commode may originally have been at Hackwood though not included in the 1998 sale.

Literature: Christie’s Hackwood Park Sale, April 1998, Lots 356-372.

Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 by Susan Stuart, Vol II, Plates 556-558 and 561 for this pattern of “Tower” or “Turret” corners.

Lindsay Boynton, “Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760 – 1800”, Plates: 21, 35, 36, 37, 115, 116, 123, 127, & 155 all have distinctive similarities with concave fronts and Tower or Turret corners with reeded columns etc.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period furniture, dating from roughly 1811 to 1830, is characteristically influenced by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian forms. Designs prioritize clean geometric silhouettes, fine wood veneers such as mahogany and rosewood, subtle stringing or inlay, and decorative brass hardware.

Regency commodes typically feature solid oak or pine drawer linings with mahogany, rosewood, or zebrawood veneers. Common construction details include hand-cut dovetail joints, reeded or fluted pilasters, ebony line inlay, and brass castors attached to turned legs.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-finished dovetails, historic wear inside drawer runs, period-appropriate lock plates, and natural patination on timber surfaces. The presence of original turned wood or brass knobs alongside period construction techniques confirms authentic early 19th-century origin.

A Regency commode functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Combining dark timber hues with lighter wall backgrounds or contemporary artwork creates visual balance between historical design and modern decorative schemes.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish twice a year to maintain timber hydration, avoiding silicones or harsh chemicals, and keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
