What is a wooden campaign trunk?

A wooden campaign trunk is a portable storage chest used by military officers, colonial administrators and travellers to transport personal belongings, uniforms and papers. Built during the Georgian and Victorian eras, these chests utilise durable timbers and protective metal bindings designed for long journeys by sea and land.

Why are camphor wood trunks common?

Camphor wood was chosen for military and naval trunks because its natural scent repels moths and insects, safeguarding woollens and documents in hot climates. Cabinet makers also valued the timber for its stability and resistance to moisture during extended travel across the British Empire.

How were campaign trunks used?

These trunks served as portable wardrobes, desks and storage receptacles for individuals on active service or colonial posting. Their rectangular proportions and flush-fitting hardware allowed them to be easily stacked and loaded onto pack animals, wagons or ship decks.

How do I date a campaign trunk?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, the style of brass or iron hardware, and any inscribed ownership details. Georgian examples tend to show heavier timber proportions and simpler mounts, while Victorian versions often feature refined brass strapwork and recessed fittings.
