How do I date early pieces?

Makers often used impressed factory ciphers and painted monograms on the underside of the earthenware base. Comparing the specific backstamp to known production years establishes the chronology. Style shifts also help, as Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts motifs belong primarily to the Victorian and Edwardian periods, while later designs adopt Art Deco geometries.

What is Florian ware?

Florian ware is an early style developed during the Macintyre period featuring flowing blue-on-white or multi-coloured floral tube-lining. William Moorcroft received a gold medal at the St Louis International Exhibition for these designs. These pieces represent the height of his early decorative output and remain highly sought after by collectors today.

Are all items signed?

Many pieces carry William Moorcroft's signature, either painted in blue script or impressed into the clay body. Unsigned items may still feature factory stamps and pattern names that confirm their origin. Earlier Macintyre items typically display the company printed mark alongside the designer's initials.

How should I display them?

Place vases and bowls away from direct sunlight to protect the stability of the glazed earthenware surfaces. Ensure shelves are stable and support the base fully. Avoid using water in antique vases with delicate interior crazing to prevent staining the porous ceramic body over time.
