How do percussion pistols work?

A percussion pistol operates by placing a small primed cap containing fulminate of mercury onto a hollow metal nipple. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer falls to strike the cap, creating a spark that ignites the black powder charge inside the barrel. This system proved significantly more reliable in wet weather than the earlier flintlock ignition method. It quickly became the standard mechanism for both military and civilian firearms during the nineteenth century.

Many nineteenth-century percussion arms served active military roles across British imperial campaigns and the American Civil War. Officers, cavalry units, and infantrymen routinely carried belt and holster pistols as secondary sidearms. Civilian variants were similarly purchased by travellers and gentlemen for personal defence. Government contracts often stamped these weapons with specific military marks to denote official service.
