Were these originally desks or dressing tables?

Many examples served a dual purpose in period bedchambers, functioning as writing surfaces by day and dressing tables for grooming. Their flexible proportions allowed them to adapt easily to different domestic tasks. Makers often built these pieces with ample knee space and convenient drawer arrangements that accommodated both writing instruments and personal effects.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Georgian and George I pieces usually display restrained proportions, figured walnut veneers, and traditional drawer construction with fine dovetails. They often take the form of lowboys or kneehole desks with straightforward cabriole legs. Examine the secondary woods inside the drawers, as early pieces typically utilise oak or pine internals rather than modern laminates.

How do I care for burr walnut?

Protect burr walnut surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity to prevent veneer cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished finish. Avoid using silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical sprays, opting instead for traditional beeswax applied sparingly when the timber appears dry.

What is the difference between Art Deco and earlier styles?

Art Deco walnut dressing table desks from the 1930s favour bold geometric forms, skyscraper silhouettes, and dramatic book-matched veneers over traditional curved legs. They often integrate matching mirrors and glass elements. In contrast, 18th and 19th-century variants lean heavily on historical revivals like Queen Anne styling, featuring cabriole legs and classical brass hardware.
