What is a lamp table?

A lamp table is a small accent table designed specifically to hold a lighting fixture beside a seating arrangement or bed. These compact surfaces provide accessible placement for reading lights without dominating a room. They appear in various heights and footprints, ranging from octagonal occasional tables to narrow bedside units and nests of tables.

How do I date a wooden table?

Dating relies on observing construction techniques, timber choices, and stylistic markers characteristic of specific eras. For instance, heavy turned legs often point to Edwardian revivalism, while clean geometric veneers suggest an Art Deco origin. Examining the underside and interior joints reveals tool marks and assembly methods that distinguish nineteenth-century work from later reproductions.

Where were these tables made?

These pieces originate from British, French, Scandinavian, and Italian workshops, reflecting regional preferences in timber and decoration. British makers favoured oak and mahogany, while continental makers utilised walnut and painted finishes. International trade and stylistic exchange also introduced techniques like Kashmiri hand-painting and Anglo-Indian carving into domestic interiors.

How do I style a lamp table?

A lamp table accommodates task lighting while leaving space for small decorative objects or books. Placing one beside an armchair creates a functional reading corner that anchors the furniture layout. Pairing contrasting woods or matching an Art Deco walnut table with period lighting enhances the cohesive character of a room.
