How do you support the folding leaves?

Most folding leaves rely on hinged wooden brackets, swing legs, or pivoting gateleg frames that rotate outward from the central base. These supports distribute weight evenly to keep the extended surface stable during use. When lowering the flaps, the support simply swings back or folds inward flush against the underframe, allowing the table to rest in a compact footprint.

Where were these tables used originally?

These versatile items served dining rooms, libraries, and drawing rooms where flexible floor space was essential. Pembroke and Sutherland versions often stood beside seating or acted as impromptu writing desks. Larger gateleg and drop-leaf formats accommodated dining or tea service when fully opened, then retreated against a wall between meals.

How do I care for a wood surface?

Protect the timber by avoiding direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight, which can fade polished mahogany or walnut veneers. Regular dusting with a soft cloth preserves the finish without building up heavy residues. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally maintains the natural lustre of the wood grain and feeds older surfaces against drying out.

How do I identify a Pembroke table?

A Pembroke table is distinguished by its central rectangular board flanked by two short drop leaves and typically accompanied by a single drawer at one end. The legs are often tapered or turned, sometimes mounted on small brass castors. This specific proportion separates it from larger gateleg dining tables or occasional Sutherland models designed with narrower centres.
