How do I clean vintage silver pepper casters?

Clean silver components using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish to remove tarnish without scratching the metal surface. Avoid submerging glass inserts or fabric linings in harsh cleaning solutions. Ensure the pierced lid is thoroughly dried after washing to prevent moisture from trapping inside the chamber and clogging the sprinkler holes.

Are novelty pepper pots functional?

Novelty pepper pots shaped like animals function just like traditional shakers, often featuring a removable base plug or a threaded head for refilling. Many owners use them for daily dining while others display them as decorative cabinet pieces. Heavier cast silver models provide good stability on the table despite their sculptural forms.

What is the difference between a sugar caster and a pepper caster?

Sugar casters are generally larger vessels with taller bodies and wider perforated tops designed to sift caster sugar over desserts and pastries. Pepper casters are smaller individual pots intended for seasoning savoury dishes at the table. Proportions and internal capacities distinguish the two forms clearly within matching condiment sets.

How do I identify the date of a silver caster?

Examine the base or lid for hallmarks, which include date letters, town marks, and maker's marks that pinpoint the exact year of assay. English silver hallmarks provide a reliable chronological record for pieces manufactured from the eighteenth century onwards. Stylistic cues such as Edwardian proportions or Art Deco geometric lines also help narrow down the period.
