How do I date a mahogany chest?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber choices, and hardware styles across different eras. Georgian and Regency pieces often show hand-cut dovetails and distinct brass handle designs. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce machine-sawn elements and different veneering techniques. Comparing the secondary woods inside the drawers helps clarify the period of manufacture.

What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable storage unit designed for travel by military officers during the nineteenth century. These pieces split into separate sections for easy transport. They feature recessed brass handles and corner brackets to prevent damage during movement. The sturdy mahogany construction withstands rigorous transit while maintaining a refined domestic appearance.

Where should I place a bow-front chest?

A bow-front chest suits bedrooms, hallways, or living rooms where its curved profile softens rigid architectural lines. The projecting centre draws the eye, making it a strong focal point against a plain wall. Ensure adequate clearance around the piece so the curved drawers open smoothly without obstruction. Placing a lamp or mirror above it completes a traditional arrangement.

A tallboy is a vertical storage chest that stacks one set of drawers above another, maximising capacity while occupying a minimal floor footprint. Eighteenth and nineteenth-century examples often combine a chest on chest configuration. These pieces offer substantial linen and clothing storage without dominating smaller rooms. Their height draws the eye upward, adding a sense of vertical proportion to an interior.
