What is a tantalus decanter?

A tantalus decanter is a spirit bottle housed within a locking wooden frame that secures the stoppers in place. This design prevents unauthorized pouring while displaying the glassware. The framework typically uses timber like oak or coromandel fitted with a metal locking bar operated by a key. Such pieces served as portable barware on sideboards during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

How do I date an old decanter?

Dating relies on stylistic shifts in the glass cutting, the shape of the bottle, and any accompanying metal mounts. Victorian examples often feature heavy cut crystal and star-cut bases, whereas Art Deco pieces show geometric lines. Silver collars frequently bear hallmarks indicating the assay office and exact year of manufacture. Timber housings and locking hardware also correspond to the prevailing design tastes of their decade of origin.

What is a whisky noggin?

A whisky noggin is a small, individual jug designed to hold a single measure of liquor for immediate pouring. These vessels usually feature a handle, a lip for pouring, and a sterling silver collar. Many noggins include a small silver label suspended by a chain around the neck to identify the contents. They appeared frequently on Edwardian and George V dining tables and bar settings.

How do I care for antique glass decanters?

Maintenance involves gentle hand washing in warm water using mild detergent to preserve the clarity of the crystal and any silver mounts. Abrasive cleaning agents and extreme temperature changes should be avoided to protect the aged glass and stoppers. Ground glass stoppers and necks require careful handling to prevent chipping. Wooden tantalus frames benefit from occasional treatment with appropriate furniture wax to keep the timber conditioned.
