Spelter is a zinc alloy that makers utilised for sculptural casting during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It melts at lower temperatures than bronze and takes fine surface detail, making it popular for decorative figures and lamps.

How do I clean these figures?

Dust the metal and stone surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent accumulation. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishes, as these treatments can strip the original patination or paint finishes.

Are these pieces solid bronze?

No, these sculptures are cast from spelter rather than bronze. Spelter is lighter in weight and softer than bronze. Many examples feature a dark patination or gilt surface designed to emulate the appearance of bronze.

Why are they mounted on marble?

Spelter is a relatively soft and brittle metal that requires a sturdy foundation for support. Heavy marble or onyx bases provide necessary stability while adding decorative contrast to the metal sculpture.
