What defines a club chair?

A club chair is a deep, comfortable armchair upholstered in thick leather. These seats originated in French clubs and smoking rooms during the early twentieth century. They are built around sturdy frames designed to offer a relaxed sit. The thick leather develops a rich patina with age and regular use.

How do I identify a bergere chair?

A bergere is distinguished by its enclosed upholstered sides and exposed wooden frame. Many feature woven cane panels along the arms and back. This construction provides a lighter visual weight than fully upholstered armchairs. They are traditionally paired with a loose seat cushion for comfort.

Where were bistro sets used?

Bistro sets were designed for pavement cafes, small balconies, and gardens across France. Their compact proportions made them easy to fold or move. They typically combine cast iron bases with wooden slats or marble tops. This construction ensured durability against outdoor weather conditions.

Split cane is a woven material created from the outer skin of rattan stems. It provides a flexible yet strong surface for chair backs and panels. Craftsmen thread the material through pre-drilled holes in the wooden frame. This technique creates a breathable, lightweight backing common on bergere chairs.
