How do I identify an Edwardian shelf?

Edwardian pieces date from the early 20th century and frequently utilise oak, mahogany or pine in lighter, simpler designs than heavy Victorian items. They often appear as small open bookcases, side tables or tiered stands reflecting domestic utility.

Were these shelves used only for books?

These pieces served multiple domestic purposes beyond holding volumes, acting as display surfaces for ceramics, plates and decorative ornaments. Formats like wall brackets, hanging shelves, corner cabinets and plate racks catered to specific rooms and storage needs.

Burr walnut is a decorative wood veneer sourced from the twisted growth nodes of walnut trees, producing intricate and swirling grain patterns. Cabinet makers utilised this material to accent high-status furniture during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many larger open bookcases from the Victorian and later periods feature adjustable shelving systems to accommodate varying book heights. Simpler wall-mounted shelves and antique what-nots typically retain fixed tiers.
