What were table boxes used for?

These containers served specific domestic purposes in the nineteenth century, holding personal correspondence, sewing accessories, tobacco, and jewellery. Larger silver caskets remained on drawing-room tables to display wealth, while wooden work boxes kept needlework organised in private parlours.

How do I clean silver boxes?

Polishing requires gentle handling with a soft cloth and a reputable silver cleaner to preserve engraved details and cast relief work. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided, particularly on pieces with velvet linings or gilded interior washes.

Can I use these for modern storage?

These compact containers adapt readily to modern interiors for storing small daily accessories, cufflinks, and keepsakes on dressing tables. Their robust construction ensures they function securely as functional catch-alls while retaining their decorative presence.

How are different periods identified?

Dating relies upon hallmarks stamped into silver components, maker marks, and stylistic shifts from Regency neoclassical lines to high Victorian ornamentation. Timber choices and construction methods, such as dovetailing techniques and veneer thickness, provide further confirmation of the decade of manufacture.
