How do you open a fold-over card table?

The upper leaf rotates on a central pivot or hinge mechanism, swinging through ninety degrees to rest upon the extended framework. This movement distributes the weight evenly across the base while concealing internal storage compartments. Once rotated into position, the leaf folds down flat to create a stable surface lined with baize. Users must lift the top section gently to clear the alignment pegs before swivelling the timber.

What were these tables used for?

These pieces served as dual-purpose furniture for nineteenth-century drawing rooms and parlours, functioning as decorative side consoles when closed. During evening gatherings, they transformed into dedicated surfaces for card games, chess, and social entertainment. Some variants included specialised wells for counters, roulette, or writing equipment. This adaptability made them essential for households managing space efficiently.

How do you distinguish early and late Victorian pieces?

Early examples often display restrained classical proportions with flame mahogany veneers and bold pillar supports. They rely on traditional cabinet-making techniques established during preceding decades. Late Victorian versions frequently incorporate revival styles such as Chippendale or Sheraton influences, alongside intricate marquetry and satinwood inlay. Envelope mechanisms also become more common toward the end of the nineteenth century.

Can you use them as everyday side tables?

The tables function effectively as hallway consoles or lamp tables when closed, occupying minimal floor space against a wall. Their finished timber tops display rich grain patterns suitable for daily display. Opening the top requires clearing any objects placed on the surface. Owners should protect the antique baize lining from heavy items if used regularly for general placement.
