How were altar tables used?

Altar tables functioned primarily as focal points in domestic halls for ceremonial displays and ancestral rites. Over time, their striking architectural proportions led to their adoption as decorative console furniture in modern rooms.

What woods appear most often?

Elm is the predominant timber found in provincial tables, valued for its robust nature and distinct grain. Other examples utilise dense Asian hardwoods and camphorwood, sometimes complemented by applied lacquer or marble inserts.

How do I date a console?

Dating relies on assessing the timber wear, joinery methods, and the presence of period characteristics associated with Qing dynasty production. Subtle shifts in carving depth and lacquer composition also help distinguish eighteenth-century pieces from later nineteenth-century work.

Where do these consoles fit?

Their slender proportions make them ideal for narrow hallways, entrance spaces, and living room perimeters. They provide functional surface area for lamps and objects while introducing distinct historic character to an interior scheme.
