Are these mirrors suitable for modern interiors?

These decorative mirrors integrate well into contemporary spaces by adding texture, historic contrast, and reflective depth to minimal walls. Placing an ornate framed mirror above a simple modern sideboard creates a striking focal point. The warmth of walnut and gilt finishes complements neutral colour palettes, bridging the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary living.

How can I tell an eighteenth-century mirror from a later revival piece?

Distinguishing period pieces involves examining the construction timber, the fixings, and the characteristics of the mirror glass itself. Eighteenth-century examples often display hand-cut nails, dense timber shrinkage, and subtle distortions in the original glass. Revival pieces made during the Victorian or Edwardian eras utilise machine-sawn timbers and more uniform glass plates, even when adopting earlier Queen Anne or Chippendale styles.

What is the best way to clean antique mirror glass?

Cleaning antique mirror glass requires a gentle approach using a soft microfibre cloth and a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the glass. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the silvering or damaging old wooden frames. Avoid pressing heavily on the glass, as fragile plates or degraded backing layers can crack or lose their remaining silver coating.
