How do I clean a repousse silver dish?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle, non-abrasive silver cream to remove tarnish without wearing down the high points of the relief decoration. Avoid harsh liquid dips that strip the natural darkening in the recesses of the pattern. Store the dish away from direct sunlight and high humidity to slow the return of oxidation on the metal surface.

What were these dishes used for originally?

These vessels served diverse domestic functions, from holding calling cards in a hallway to containing visiting cards, trinkets, or sugar cubes at tea. Shallow dishes functioned well as pin trays on dressing tables or as decorative fruit bowls. Larger footed baskets and tazze were designed for display on sideboards or dining tables during formal gatherings.

How do I date a silver dish?

British pieces typically feature hallmarks stamped into the metal, indicating the assay office, the maker's mark, and a date letter corresponding to a specific year. Examining the crown, lion passant, and regional symbols provides an exact year of manufacture. International or unmarked pieces require stylistic analysis, comparing the floral motifs, form, and production techniques against known periods like Art Nouveau or the Victorian era.

Are silver plated dishes less collectible?

Silver plated and Old Sheffield Plate items represent a distinct tradition of craftsmanship and often feature identical repousse work to their solid silver counterparts. They offer an alternative entry point into period dining wares and decorative arts. Collectors often value them for their historical manufacturing methods, such as fused copper plating, rather than intrinsic metal weight alone.
